Gamma Ray Bursts, Cosmic Ray Origin, and the Unidentified EGRET Sources

چکیده
Statistical arguments show that the volumeand time-averaged kinetic power of GRBs and fireball transients (FTs) into an L galaxy like the Milky Way is at the level of 10 ergs s. This number, though with wide uncertainties related to the internal or external shock efficiency, is sufficient to power hadronic cosmic rays observed locally. The release of energy by the high-mass progenitor stars of GRBs and FTs is sufficient to power the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, as already shown by Waxman and Vietri in 1995. It is sufficient to power the cosmic rays above the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum. Indeed, all hadronic cosmic rays could originate from the high-mass ( > ∼ 100 M⊙) stars that collapse to black holes, in the process forming GRBs and FTs. This source class represents a new solution to the problem of cosmic-ray origin. The ∼ 10-10 black holes made by these stars could make their presence known by radiating as they accrete from the ISM, by microlensing background radiations, and by forming luminous binary systems. Some unidentified EGRET sources could be isolated black holes that accrete from the ISM. Better imaging and sensitivity with GLAST and TeV observatories will test this model for the unidentified γ-ray sources, and this theory for cosmic-ray origin.

Gamma ray astrophysics: the EGRET results
Cosmic gamma rays provide insight into some of the most dynamic processes in the Universe. At the dawn of a new generation of gamma-ray telescopes, this review summarizes results from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the principal predecessor mission studying high-energy photons in the 100 MeV energy range. EGRET viewed a gammaray sky do...
متن کاملDiffuse Emission from the Galactic Plane and Unidentified EGRET Sources
Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced in interactions of cosmic rays with gas and ambient photon fields and thus provides us with an indirect measurement of cosmic rays in various locations in the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray continuum is more intense than expected both at energies below 200 keV and above 1 GeV. The existing models for the high-energy excess are reviewed in the light...
متن کاملGamma Ray Bursts as Possible High Energy Sources
Gamma-ray bursts are known to be sources of high-energy γ rays, and are likely to be sources of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Following a short review of observations of GRBs at multi-MeV energies and above, the physics of leptonic and hadronic models of GRBs is summarized. Evidence for two components in BATSE and EGRET/TASC data suggest that GRBs are sources of high-energy cosmic rays...
متن کاملConstraints on cosmic-ray origin from TeV gamma-ray observations of supernova remnants
If supernova remnants (SNRs) are the site of cosmicray acceleration, the associated nuclear interactions should result in an observable flux of γ-rays for the nearest SNRs. Measurements of the TeV γ-ray flux from six nearby, radio-bright SNRs have been made with the Whipple Observatory imaging air Čerenkov telescope over the period September 1993 to June 1996. No significant emission has been d...
متن کاملHigh Energy Gamma Rays from Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Ray Protons in Gamma Ray Bursts
It has recently been proposed that ultrahigh energy (∼> 10 19 eV) cosmic rays (UHECRs) are accelerated by the blast waves associated with GRBs. We calculate the observed synchrotron spectrum from protons and energetic leptons formed in the cascades initiated by photopion production, taking into account γγ attenuation at the source. Normalizing to the emission characteristics of GRB 970508, we p...
